Bertha Lee McClendon, Youngstown, Ohio - obit

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mrs. Bertha L. Heath McClendon, 85, of Youngstown departed this life on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown with her loving family at her side.

Bertha was born December 9, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama, a daughter of James, Sr. and Ida Mae Barnes Heath, moving to Youngstown at a youthful age.

She attended Youngstown City Schools and was a graduate of East High School.

She was employed for many years at Ravenna Arsenal and retired as an assembler at General Motors Lordstown.

Bertha was always very cheerful and a pleasant individual and loved meeting people and shared her blessings by always thinking of others first. She was also a cheerful giver and loved sharing her love; especially to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bertha was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Clifford Kimbrough and was a member of the church choir. She was a former member of Greater Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late B. J. Myers and Rev. Michael Small. She loved to sing in the house of the Lord and shared her voice by being in the “80” Voices, later known as the Good Shepherd and the Miriam Choir.

She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories her daughter, Janice McClendon-Torbert; a son-in-law, Larry Holmes of Chicago, Illinois; a sister, Laura Whatley-Jones of Youngstown; grandchildren, Ervin “Chucky” and Kimberly Cowan, Tamara Moore, Regina (Ronnell) Elkins of Austintown, Clevon McClendon, Jillian Russell all of Youngstown, Bruce McClendon, Jr. of Detroit, Michigan, Alexis (Sta’Lone) Davis of Fairburn, Georgia and Ashley (James) Durham of Chicago, Illinois; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a great-nephew/Godson, Terry Foster; sister-in-law, Melba Woods of Youngstown; brother-in-law, Woodrow McClendon of Georgia and a host of nieces, nephews, good friends and her extended family whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Edward McClendon; children, Darnell and Bruce McClendon, Karen (Joseph) Christian and Darlene Holmes; brother, James Heath; a sister, Elizabeth Foster and son-in-law, Ralph E. Torbert.

Friends may call Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 2823 Hillman Street.

Funeral Services will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m.
