Lieutenant Charles Shafer passed away Wednesday at Salem Regional Medical Center.


SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – The Salem Police Department is mourning the sudden death of one of its own.

Thursday afternoon, a procession of police cruisers from around the area escorted the body of Lieutenant Charles Shafer to the Stark Memorial Funeral Home.

The department’s chief said Shafer, 54, died unexpectedly on Wednesday at Salem Regional Medical Center.

Shafer spent more than 26 years on the job, joining the department in 1991.

He was not on duty at the time of his death.

Shafer was born and raised in Salem and leaves behind his wife, twin sons and daughter.

Calling hours are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow. Burial will take place at Hope Cemetery.

The cause of death has not been released.

Shafer was a tissue donor. Life-saving organs were recovered from his body, which will potentially help save and heal up to 50 people, according to Lifebanc.
