AKRON, Ohio (WKBN) – Late Saturday afternoon, Akron police arrested the man accused of shooting and killing a 4-year-old girl Friday night.
According to a police report, 31-year-old Darnell Bitting allegedly fired an assault rifle into a car that hit a young child in the back seat.
Police say they found Bitting at a woman’s house in Akron around 4 p.m. Saturday. He was taken into custody without incident.
In the police report, the child’s mother says she drove to the house to pick up some of her belongings. In the car with her were four children — ages seven, six, four and three — and their grandmother.
The children and grandmother stayed in the car while the mother went into the house. The report says the mother started breaking windows to get inside when no one answered the door.
The mother said Bitting then walked out of the house and fired the rifle, according to the report.
Officials have identified the girl as Janaya Swain.
